Well Worth Reading - I Liked It

I have to agree that some negative reviews have been a bit harsh ,for me the book is well-researched and written , and above , very readable ( the two don't always go together ) The book is in 2 main sections . Its discusses the early history of French troops serving with the Germans in WW2 on the Eastern Front ,the Legion of French Volunteers Against Bolshevism ( or LVF). The book then talks about the formation of SS Charlemagne and its introduction to combat on the Eastern Front.The second and main part of the book looks at the role the unit played in the battle for Pomerania ( to the East of the River Oder ) and then the Defence of Berlin later . The best part is the account of the fighting in Berlin from survivors ,in their own words .

The French SS

I purchased this book after buying some Bolt Action Charlemagne wargame miniatures so I could learn something about the unit, particularly their role in the Battle of Berlin. It have me exactly the background information I required. I am a little surprised by the indifferent reviews from other readers. I found the book readable, informative and interesting with a good balance between overview and detail. A good read, worth the money.

Le pen is mightier than le sword.

Very detailed and clearly relying heavily on Robert Soulat's "extended eyewitness testimony", this does give a flavour of the factional nature of the Charlemagne Division and its ultimate fate. The clunky translation in some sections spoils it for me, but I doubt that a second edition will appear.
