3A good effort, but let down by some factual inaccuracies
By Amazon Customer
I appreciate the effort that Ken has gone to with this book because he very clearly enjoys talking about this wonderful show. However I can't give this book a full recommendation because it is filled with typos and inaccuracies. The most prominent errors are the following:Ken states that he doesn't know who the kidnapped woman in Christmas With The Joker is, and supposes that she must be Commissioner Gordon's wife, when she is very clearly Summer Gleeson. Summer is quite a prominent character in this show, so the fact that Ken doesn't know who she is seems strange.Ken repeatedly misspells the names of key characters such as Lucius Fox ( "Lucious Fox"), Jervis Tetch ("Jearvis Tetch") and Roland Daggett ("Roland Daggatt")Clayface does have a theme. In fact, according to the pamphlet that came with the Animated Series soundtrack, Shirley Walker won a Daytime Emmy for Clayface's theme. I would argue that it was some of the best music in the entire series as it highlights both the tragedy of what happened to Matt Hagen as well as the menacing anger of Clayface, so to read Ken dismissing it so freely was disappointing.Rupert Thorne was not created for the animated series, he first appeared in Detective Comics in the 1970's.The obese slave driver in The Forgotten is named Boss Biggins according to the episode credits.I found it strange that there was no mention of the clear tonal shift once the original writing team had left the series and was replaced by Paul Dini and co.It may seem like I didn't enjoy Ken's work based on this review, but I don't want to give the impression that this book is without merit. Some of the ideas Ken brings up are quite thought provoking - I particularly enjoyed his thoughts on Two-Face and See No Evil - but I would've liked to have seen more of his own analysis and less of him simply recounting the events of the episodes. Batman the Animated Series was clearly heavily influenced by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, classic Hollywood and the work of the Fleischer studios. I would've liked to have seen this discussed more.
