This is another book from the Made in France series; we previously reviewed the Embroidery in Red, White and Blue from the same series. Blackwork is a traditional form of embroidery with black thread on a white background although some of the projects in the book are the reverse, white thread on a black background.Like the previous book you are shown full page photographs of each of the 50 projects and the motifs used are in full page grids at the back of the book. There is a useful section at the front showing some of the stitches needed and talking you through fabric and equipment choices. The majority of the projects are for the home: curtains, cushions, tablecloths and book covers but there are also some personal accessories such as bags and scarves included. Some of the designs look simple enough for beginners and others more complex and time consuming. However, there is nothing to say you have to use a set motif for a set project; it would be easy enough to use a different motif. The contrasting colours make for an eye-catching result, if you like needlework and are looking for some good ideas for home or gifts then this book is perfect. This review originally appeared on The Sewing Directory.

This is a real contemporary twist on traditional blackwork. Use this charming embroidery with its contrasting colour stitches to make interesting gifts. Includes many alphabet styles and stitches on graphs at the back of the book. I don't like all the 50 projects but there's enough here for everyone to like. I think the lampshades are very effective - I like the way Sonia has worked white on black as well as the usual black on white. But what is most unusual about this book is that there are no actual written instructions - just good images of the projects and the charts at the back of the book - so no ideas as to how much material or embroidery floss is used or anything - you just have to work it out from the charts, which is not difficult but if you have never done it before - it could put you off. Two pages of very brief instructions at the beginning.

I love this book. I have had it a couple of years and I keep hoping there will be another like it. (There won't be, but I can hope) The first part of the book has some fairly nice projects in neutral tones, which gives the book a very modern and pleasantly calm feel. It is certainly enjoyable to thumb through. I haven't used any of the projects as such, but they give you an idea of some of the ways blackwork can be used.I have used the second part of the book quite often. There are many blackwork designs that can be used in many ways, on their own or in combination to create simple or more complex borders, decorative effects, pictures and more. I love the leaves, flowers and bugs in particular. I have used them to decorate bags, clothes, quilts and to make pictures to frame. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in hand sewing.
