The Saw franchise bucks the trend in that the sequels not only draw you in, but leave you with a hunger for the next...
By The Vanarchist
Most films, of any genre but *especially* horror, tend to have run the course (an understatement if ever) by the sequel. Has anyone actually watched Nightmare on Elm Street 2,3,4,5,6,7 (I can't recall how many there were) without doing a Johnny Rotten 'ever felt you've been cheated?'Saw, somehow, bucks the trend. I started watching the series again as my partner had managed to avoid them entirely as she's not a hack and slash fan. That said, neither am I, and I persuaded here that there is far more to Saw than gore. There's the narrative, which is very cleverly dragged to and fro between the movies. There's the characterisation which does allow you to invest in more than just the killer, although the way [SPOILER ALERT] we get to see what made Jigsaw in Saw IV is brilliantly done and is the most rounded portrayal of the man, not just the maniac, of all the movies in the franchise. And there's the tension, which is palpable throughout. Tell me you didn't feel for Officer Rig, that you didn't lose some fingernail length, that you didn't yearn for him to do the right thing.A brilliant film, well written, well acted, well directed. Saw is the movie that can survive being sequeled. That I managed to buy the final four movies for 1p (yes, a penny) each (plus £1 postage) wasn't half bad either. Nice one Amazon Marketplace...
