A good guide to how to read between the lines when travelling.

The book is full of insightful observations that reveal the inner motives of people as well as the cultural background in which they operate.The book was originally titled "Travel to work in 70 countries" which describes the book better than the new alluring title... although the author visits fewer countries. In effect, E.T Laing is recounting his ups and downs with people and cultures as he goes about his job of consultant in shipping. His style of writing is easy, humorous and insightful.I was not gripped by the stories but I was entertained well enough.

A book with a difference that captures the travel experience

I very much enjoyed this book, which consists of over 40 short vignettes from experiences in some of the countries that the author has worked in. They are well written, in a style that is easy to read. Ted Laing's prose flows easily and combines excellent descriptions of the impressions he formed from his observations and experiences in those countries, with engaging accounts of some of his encounters with the people he met during his work. His descriptions of the landscapes and distinct 'atmosphere' in the countries he has visited are quite vivid. His comments on their culture and history from his observations of the people around him and events that he experienced are insightful, poignant and sometimes quite dark. His stories of the people he worked with are often very amusing and reminded me of similar experiences I have had working abroad.

Unique Perspectives on "Far Away Places"

Ted Laing has covered a lot of ground in his extensive international professional career. I am familiar with a few of these destinations and can appreciate the accuracy of Ted's observations in these charming vignettes. More than this, he has a unique talent for discovering and describing the unusual and exotic aspects of these very varied locations. Well written and absorbing this volume will transport you to numerous points of interest well off the usual tourist track. A wry sense of humour underpins these voyages to some undiscovered parts of our planet. Thoroughly recommended.
