Geoffrey Beene (August 30, 1927 – September 28, 2004) was one of the greatest ever American fashion designer and couturiers. He was one of New York's most famous fashion faces, recognized for his artistic and technical skills and for creating simple, comfortable but dressy women's wear. For nearly 40 years he dressed many famous powerful women and ‘A’ list celebrities.Beene founded his company in New York City in 1963, a year later he was awarded the Coty American Fashion Critics' Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of fashion. His first collection was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine.By the mid-1970's, Beene had a number of licensing agreements for products such as eyewear and bed linen. In 1976, Beene became the first American designer to show a collection in Milan. This success led to his sixth Coty Award in 1977. In 1982, Beene received his eighth Coty Award, the most awarded to any one designer, as of the early 2000’s.Beene was known as both an innovator and a teacher. Several of his former apprentices one being Alber Elbaz now of Lanvin are successful fashion designers, thanks to his early guidance.Mr Beene (as he was known) was a radical designer loved by the fashion cognoscenti, he was an adventurous and experimental designer; he helped define modern American fashion in the latter twentieth century. His designs explored the shapes and movements of the human body with clever use of seams and skillful geometry His influence hit a whole new generation of designers and the wardrobes of many stylish women across the world.Beene was famous for his superbly clean cutting, and a fluidity of cloth to body in the manner of the great Vionnet, he had a sensuous appreciation of the body and was a designer who was careful to surprise, rather than shock his audience when dressing the female form. He aimed for the sensuous rather than the sexy in his creations. His bolero jackets so effectively complemented the simplicity of his dresses that jacket and dress became an indistinguishable ensemble. His utter simplicity from a distance became infinite technicality up close. Like the great Balenciaga, he was a designers designer. In this book his friend Kim Hastreiter sends a sort of valentine to him, recounting his life and work as one of America’s greatest ever radical fashion innovators and designers. It would have been nice to see more photographs of his work and collections here, but I still think that this work should be in every serious collection of fashion and couture books; a fitting tribute to a great fashion design leader and master.
