Death and the Girl Next Door was a lot of things except what I thought it would be. Truthfully having read the synopsis I expected perhaps something along the lines of Existence by Abbi Glines, But it turns out I was wrong and way off the mark at that.As I started reading I initially found the style of language between Lorelei and her best friends, Brooke and Casey aka Glitch, a little confusing ad hard to follow in the speedy pace that Darynda Jones set. But as I continued reading I soon got into the swing of things and fell into the playful banter between the three.Cameron Lusk and jared Kovach appear almost straight away and although I would say the tension is palpable that would be an understatement as they are at each other's throats after moments of each other's encounter. Both of them know more than they're letting on. Both are hiding the truth, the same story from Lorelei. Each sheltering his own side of it, unwilling to reveal anything whilst begging her to believe them. And boy do they hold onto their secrets! Confusion was like a light fog in my mind as I ploughed on determined as much as Lorelei to find out the truth, whilst Cameron and Jared were the light of truth that I could barely keep track of.But when I did reach the edge of the fog and shed light on the mystery it baffled me. The twists that Darynda Jones had in store for me where not forseeable and left me fairly surprised when I reached them, which only reinforced my idea that this was not what I was expecting. But as confusing and somewhat disorientating as it initially was, Death and the Girl Next Door was a pleasant read. This novel was a good start to the Darklight series whilst setting the scene for what promises to be a sequel charged with more action and plot twists. I will be curious to find out what they are.

Well, this was enjoyable. But, let's face it, Darynda Jones could re-write the phonebook, get Lorelei King to read it to me, and it would be enjoyable. She's just that awesome, and has an absolutely wicked sense of the comical. That said, it wasn't in the same league as her Charlie Davidson series. It started off well, got kinda muggy in the middle, dumped a load of info in my lap, and promptly left. Which is just rude.At the moment jury's out as to whether I'm moving forward with this one...3 stars ★★★

This was Darynda Jones first venture into the young adult world and I was impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed Death and the Girl Next Door. While maybe not perfect, there is a lot I can overlook when I have a host of fantastic characters to capture my attention, and that's what I found here.Lorelei, the protagonist, has two amazing best friends, Glitch and Brooklyn. So when Cameron begins to stalk her, and then Jared shows up and weird things start to happen, like her dying and being brought back to life, she has them to fall back on and tells them everything. Unlike a lot of books where the heroine will keep the secrets and loses her friends. And when Cameron and Jared start hanging out with these three, I enjoyed the banter, the sarcasm and wit really kept me entertained. There is a lot of mystery in this book. Lorelei's parents just disappeared one day ten years ago and no one knows what happened. Then, there's Cameron and Jared, who between them, seem to have a lot of secrets. There's a lot of questions that come up and not all of them are answered by the end of the book.I really enjoyed the touch of romance here too. Thankfully there's no love triangle though I did feel as though the cover hinted at one. With the revelations that came at the end of this book, I'm really looking forward to the next in the series, Death, Doom and Devotion and I'm expecting great things from it.
