Expenses
By Sam Quixote
As other reviewers have noted, yes this is a very slim publication of a short story available in much larger books such as "McSweeney's 24" and Jonathan Ames' "The Double Life is Twice as Good", but instead of railing against the blantant profiteering of Amazon/Scribner by publishing a 30 page story and charging £[] for it, how about a review of the contents of the book? After all, the popularity of a short story in the mass media will always elicit books like this - remember when "Brokeback Mountain" was the most talked about film of 2005? You could have bought "Close Range" by Annie Proulx which included "Brokeback Mountain" but some enterprising publisher put out a slim edition of just that story. Rip off yes but hey it's business. If you're a fan of the HBO series "Bored to Death" then you'll recognise much of this story's contents in the very first episode of the series where Jonathan posts an ad on craigslist for his services as an unlicenced Private Detective leading to his first case of a missing girl. Where this story diverges from the episode is that the show is much less dark and serious and more playful - here Ames goes very dark and instead of going for comedy, instead goes for death and murder. Some of it funny but with a kind of gallows humour to it. Also there is no Ray and George in the story, they were included in the TV show to flesh out the world in a way this 30 page story didn't.Overall, it is a quick read but an enjoyable one. Ames writes clearly and in the charming, eloquent way that Jason Schwartzman's character speaks in on the TV show and keeps the story chugging along at a brisk pace. I'd suggest buying "The Double Life" just because you get more for your money than this slim offering, but as a review of the story "Bored to Death", it's anything but boring.

DON'T BUY THIS
By R. K. Herring
I am a massive Jonathan Ames fan, but this book is a rip off. It's a very short short story, which is available in the collection "The Double Life is Twice As Good"(a much better book which includes other material at practically the same price as this one story). It's an attempt to cash in on the brilliant TV series "Bored to Death", but has very little to do with that, apart from being the short story that inspired the idea. It's not the book of the series and it's not worth buying on its own. Buy his books and buy the series, but don't buy this. I am returning mine and because it's not Amazon's error I have to pay postage. Don't waste your money like I did. But Ames is awesome. Whoever decided to release this rip off is less so.
