Not all-encompassing but still an excellent coverage of Soviet Cold War fighters
By AK
Post Cold War literature on Soviet aircraft has been largely dominated by the Gordon / Komissarov duo, so seeing a comprehensive work by another author is refreshing. As the focus is on the Cold War era, one is mostly talking about aircraft, which are no longer seen as confidential (especially since most types are no longer in front line service with the Russian Airforce), so having a look at the topic with new material is certainly very interesting. The book covers the main Soviet fighter types of the Cold War era, with a few exceptions. The last propeller fighters introduced after WW2 are not covered, nor are some early jet types such as the Lavochkin La-15, or the naval V/STOL Yakovlev Yak-38 family. After a general introduction the book is divided into four chapters, covering the four generations of aircraft. Within the generations the author organizes the content by manufacturer and then type. Most types get a short development history, followed by technical details, service use and combat experience, where applicable. Versions are also described, as are some significant prototypes. While the focus is on the Soviet Union use, there is some detail on export success, licence production and use in foreign service, too.One will be able to find much more detailed books covering single types for the more common ones - where the book really stands out is in its coverage of some lesser known types, such as the Yak-25, the Yak-28, the Su-9 and Su-11 (where little to no English language literature exists). So in spite of the provisos I can warmly recommend the book to Cold War military aviation enthusiasts, as it has a pretty good coverage of the topic, and a pretty unique content on some lesser nown types.

Soviet Cold war Fighters
By M. Watkins
Excellent coverage of this subject and profusely illustrated with many images. See if you can like me obtain for far less than the rrp of £40.00 which you should on Amazon. I hope the author will complete a companion volume on Cold war Bombers.

You don`t have to love MiGs to love this book(but it helps)
By G. Symington
This is excellent.Chapter delineation is by Generation.First Generation has the best description of the various MiG/ Lim models built in Poland that I`ve come across.Various Cold War anecdotes told from the Soviet perspective are fascinating both to the general reader and the serious aviation historian.A collision between a Soviet fighter and an Argantinian registered CL-44 en route from Cyprus to Iran is described in breathtaking detail.Soviet reaction to the Foxbat defection in 1976 is a highlight. One of the few errors is it being initially dated `72.Although clearly translated the text is readable and highly enjoyable. As good as it gets.Buy it.
