A very detailed book on the development of a mobile flamethrower, from the use of lorries to the different style of tank that would be the most appropriate.

By David (UK )
A rather dry account of the technical development of this tank. It would be useful for a model maker or mechanical engineer but is completely lacking any combat history.

By J. J. Bradshaw
This book is interesting and informative but it is not about the Churchill Crocodile. The book would be better titled as British and Canadian flamethrower vehicles as most of the book is about vehicles other than the Churchill Crocodile. The book takes the reader through the evolution of vehicle mounted British flamethrowers of WW2 from the emergency defensive weapons made in 1940 which were not vehicle mounted through early experimental weapons mounted on trucks and armoured cars to Universal Carrier mounted devices and onto efforts to make flamethrower tanks. This includes early efforts with the Valentine before settling on the Churchill. The story includes the Churchill Oke and then arrives at the Churchill Crocodile. The story considers the development of competing flamethrower technologies, a pressurised gas device and an alternative based on cordite to generate pressure. Sadly the book does not really provide much information on how these systems worked and the rather intriguing idea of a cordite charge system to raise the flame projector pressure is not explained at all. The book includes British development of a Sherman Crocodile and proposals for flamethrower versions of the Comet and Centurion. As well as British developments the book considers Canadian flamethrower vehicle development. The book includes a review of the use of flamethrower vehicles in action, primarily in North West Europe but also Italy and the book includes some material on proposals for British use of flamethrower vehicles in Asia. The story ends with a brief summary of the demise of flamethrower vehicles.Given the title of the book it is surprising just how little of the book is actually about the Churchill Crocodile, it almost feels like the story moves on to efforts to develop a Comet Crocodile just as the section on the Churchill Crocodile is just getting into its stride. Now in some ways the story as told may well be more interesting and I found the review of early experimental vehicles fascinating but it was not really what I expected in a book which is ostensibly about the Churchill Crocodile. The weakest part of the book is that there is almost no information on the use of the Churchill Crocodile in action beyond the most cursory high level over view and which feels almost like an afterthought. This was disappointing as the Churchill tank must have been a truly terrifying weapon and it must have been quite a daunting prospect for the crews to take such a weapon into action. I suspect there is a terrific book to be written about the Churchill Crocodile in action but sadly this is not that book. The book provides good technical details of the tanks and vehicles but seems much less sure of itself when talking about the flamethrowers themselves. I'm guessing few readers would want to go into fluid dynamics and such like but even so some attempt to explain the basic principles of the devices beyond very basic descriptions of using gas to pressurise oil would have added to the story I think.I bought the Kindle version, the text transfer is very good and the pictures are reasonably well produced however they lack colour and unfortunately the exploded main diagram just does not work well in Kindle format. The book is short and an easy read. This review may sound a bit negative however it does tell the story of British and Canadian flamethrower vehicles and contains quite a bit of fascinating information. I enjoyed it, it just wasn't what I was expecting. The Kindle version is great value and ultimately it is well worth getting given it is less than many daily newspapers. If readers value the art work which has always been one of the real attractions of Osprey books then they should buy the printed version.
