Unforgettable
By Ann Hedonia
A reader picking up this biography of Oscar Wilde's doomed niece, Dorothy (Dolly), is certainly in for an experience. Not only is Dolly herself a deserving and fascinating subject but in her biographer, Joan Schenkar, she has found a remarkable champion. Ms. Schenkar, of whom I must confess I hadn't previously heard, is credited with being a leading American contemporary playwright, which may well be the case but whatever her skills as a playwright she is also an extremely good biographer - so much so that on the strength of this I ran out and bought her biography of Patricia Highsmith. Ms. Schenkar's prose crackles and sparkles like a box of fireworks startled by a match, and her insights into Dolly's troubled life, and her empathy with her subject, are profound. That could all too easily not have been the case. Dolly made saints of her friends and admirers and could quickly have worn our her welcome with a biographer. Not in Ms. Schenkar's case, who sticks with her to the sad end of her comparatively short life with sympathy and patience. Even if, like me, you weren't originally fascinated by Dolly Wilde, but were following the cast of gifted women who were drawn into the labyrinth of France's most intellectual early 20th century literary salon by its empress, Natalie Barney, this book will enthral. On a technical note, sadly, the book is let down by some poor 'print on demand' technology. The plates are badly rendered and in places the process by which the original edition had been, presumably, photocopied has been done so inadequately that whole words are omitted. It is a shame that Virago, the original publisher in 2000, couldn't have republished their edition or that a more respectful job couldn't have been made of what is an important biography of a neglected woman by a brilliant biographer. Not everyone will agree with some of the author's insights or her conclusions but no one will read this excellent book and ever forget Dolly Wilde.
