By C. J. Turner
After a disastrous foray into the d20 System, Call of Cthulhu has been adapted once again into an alternative RPG system. The GUMSHOE system, around which Trail of Cthulhu is built, removes much of the dice-rolling from Chaosium's core Call of Cthulhu RPG and instead focuses on narrative and investigation. The GUMSHOE system leaves little to chance - if you use an appropriate skill or investigative ability in the right time and right place, you succeed - the game then continues as you decide how to use what clues you've uncovered. By removing the uncertainty of dice rolling for clues (and the chance that an adventure would grind to a halt because nobody succeeds), Trail of Cthulhu games are expected to move on at a pace, allowing players more time to spend roleplaying and investigating.I haven't had a chance yet to test the system in practice, and as a long time Chaosium fan, it has taken a while to get my head round many of the concepts of Trail of Cthulhu. I found some elements of the book hard going, but on the whole it is well explained throughout. There are several chapters, but broadly the book details how to create investigator characters, occupations and skills, system mechanics, the Cthulhu Mythos, guidelines for Keepers on running games and a sample adventure.Artwork is used sparingly throughout and to good effect - the photographs and illustrations are magnificent, and the whole book has a feel of a high-quality product. There are some spelling errors and clear typos that have crept into the text, but they are infrequent.I happened upon Trail of Cthulhu by accident, but for fans of Lovecraft and horror, Trail of Cthulhu looks like a novel twist on a well-established game. I look forward to more products from Pelgrane Press in the future.

I just love the Cthulhu Mythos and all things Lovecraft, so I am somewhat bias; however I am more a board gamer and usually get my Cthulhu kicks from dice games such as Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign. Although I have not played a Role-playing Game (RPG) since my youth, and then only Dungeons and Dragons, the Trail of Cthulhu looked so stunning I could not resist buying: I must say I am glad I did. Everything you need to start playing is in this one book; no need to buy separate monster or/ and player manuals, it is all within these pages. Also gone are the complicated dice rolling systems and tables to consult. What you get is basically a mystery story telling game in which you (as the Keeper) describe mysteries to your group (who play investigators) who in turn use their character's abilities to gain information (clues) that moves the story forward. The game is all about immersing yourself in the horror's that enfolds in an adventure around 'The Old Ones' and unspeakable horrors: think a mythos murder mystery party but with everyone sat around a table. The book gives you a good 'ready to go' predesigned adventure but there also are plenty of others you can download from the publisher if you don't fancy or feel confident to design your own in the future. Learning the game was quick and the book art and lay out are excellent. Highly recommended to new, returning or experienced RPG'ers,

By Nanouk Harper
I've only played Call of Cthulhu a couple of times, but I understand that it is one of the most influential and well loved RPGs in history, and this book really brings that home - a totally new system, focussed on procedural investigation and running away from unspeakable horror - and at the same time a fond revisiting of everything that made Call of ... a classic. The deceptively simple system encourages the players and Keeper to produce a compelling gaming experience, and the details add layer after layer of delight. My personal highlights of the book include the sidebars that discuss how playtesters wanted to be less capable and more likely to die horribly or go completely insane almost immediately, with optional rules to adopt should you also wish to succumb to the mythos in short order. The suggestions for portraying insanity interesting, requiring the rest of the players and the Keeper to create the effects of psychological unbalance without telling the afflicted player what is going on.I would recommend this game to any experienced roleplayer, especially those that prefer involved plots, simple mechanics and who don't mind their characters being consumed body, mind and soul by horrific entities from beyond the stars. Regularly.
