Undervalued

Schiffer's book is possibly one of the most undervalued archaeological texts at an undergraduate university level. It would be a fair point to say, in my opinion, that if students could only own 10 archaeological books Shiffer's "Formation Process of the Archaeological Record" should be among them.This book will appeal to many those trying to answer many questions. Why do certain patterns appear in the archaeological record? Why are certain artefacts more likely in certain regions, or in certain areas on an archaeological site? Can later human activity affect an archaeological site and its artefact distribution? What are the processes which can damage sites and artefacts?Shiffer addresses all these questions in a well structured and straight forward book. Dealing first with Cultural Formation Processes, then with Environmental Formation Process, and finally the combination of the two Schiffer address the multitude of factors which act to alter, rearrange or destroy the archaeological record as it appears to us today. Using ancient and modern archaeological studies Schiffer details these processes in a clear and scientific manner.For those interested in monuments and artefacts this work should be compulsory.
