Scary...

This is one of few Poe works that I have read but I am stunned at his ability to scare his reader.This story is dark, disturbing and horrific. Told from the perspective of a man made angry and aggressive from an alcohol addiction, this story moves through the motions of his life. From happy young animal loving boy, to wife and animal abuser.

Always Relevant

It will never really be known how much influence Edgar Allan Poe has had on us because although his stories have been continuously reprinted and made into films and TV shows, his writings have most definitely inspired others and continue to do so.First appearing in The Saturday Evening Post in 1843 of course due to that this got quite large exposure and was a hit with readers. Here we have a short tale written in the first person and about a man who has fallen onto bad times with his addiction to alcohol. When he takes umbrage to his cat, Pluto, so things start to get worse, and after first mutilating the cat he then murders it.From the destruction of the cat comes a household fire, a haunting imprint on the wall, and the finding of another cat but with a white patch on his black fur. Our narrator has us believe that this patch starts to transform into something else, but is there any supernatural influences, or is the narrator trying to create them for his next felonious action?A deep and dark tale that stays with you long after you have finished reading it this short story has so much to ponder. This can be seen as a story of domestic violence caused by drink infused rages and thus has a psychological edge, which Poe was so good at achieving.

Unlucky!

A very well crafted story albeit quite disturbing. An interesting read in spite of the now archaic language, but definitely not bedtime reading!
