Intense
By Simon Barrett 'Il Penseroso'
Remorseless Russian-Jewish-American graphic novel that has the force of life writing: e believe the author is Lena, and it's quite a relief to be prompted by the cheerful author pic on the back to deduce that possibly she is not. Well, only a bit. The Brooklyn pages from page 51 ("Henry! Stop playing! You'll be late for the creative play workshop!") provide welcome comic relief

Stylish swimming in the shallows
By Jerome Burne
My first graphic novel so wasn't sure at first how picture/words combo would work - pictures be an irritating distraction, providing such definite images of the scenes/protagonists would reduce my involvement? But they played off one another really well. The format seems to encourage more dialogue and admired various ways she found of illustrating two talking heads. However the story was still very much what was important and that was engaging, sharp funny and touching. Bright insecure daughter of Jewish Russian immigrants braving the shallows of New York dating scene and then trying to make sense of it with girlfriends.

early humorous sections of the novel and later sadder parts work equally well
By William Jordan
The first graphic novel i've read and I greatly enjoyed it. The humour of the early parts of the book (the majority) as Lena goes to Russia, renews acquaintance with a childhood sweetheart, then samples internet dating back in the US gives is conveyed with subtlety and wit that lies partly in the captions, partly in the characterisation of Lena and her friends, and partly in the graphics. The whole ensemble works just as effectively in the later, sadder sections.I'd strongly recommend this.
